Grass Along the Papio
Hydroseeding in Papillion is tied closely to the creek the town is named after. French explorers called it Papillon, for the butterflies they saw along its grassy banks, and Papillion Creek still flows through the center of the city. Yards all over town drain into that creek system, which is why we treat sediment control as part of the seeding job here rather than an extra.
A growing district, a growing town
Papillion counted 24,159 people in 2020, the seventh-largest city in Nebraska, and the Papillion-La Vista school district, with well over 8,000 students, is described as one of the fastest growing in the state. Papillion-La Vista South High opened in 2003 in the southwest part of town. Growth like that means steady new-home construction, and new homes mean graded lots that need topsoil, seed and protection before the first heavy rain.
Flood-control lakes upstream
Wehrspann Lake at Chalco Hills, a 246-acre reservoir on tributary streams of Papillion Creek, opened in 1988 as part of a flood control effort, and the watershed's other dams followed the floods of 1964 and 1965. Those projects slow the creek down. They do nothing to stop silt from a bare lot reaching a storm drain. On creekside and inlet-side properties we install silt fence along the low edge and protect the inlets until the turf has filled in.
Ball fields and big open turf
Halleck Park has Monarch Field, E.A. Fricke Field and nine more softball diamonds, plus trails, open lawns and a duck pond, and the city also has Walnut Creek and Village Park. Large open turf areas like these are where hydroseeding pays off against sod: one crew can cover acres in a day with an even coat of seed and mulch. The same logic applies to a commercial pad or a long frontage along Highway 370.

Papillion Questions
Should a one-house lot in Papillion get silt fence?
On a lot that slopes toward the street or a creek, a line of silt fence or wattles on the low edge is cheap protection against mud in the gutter. We will tell you if your lot does not need it.
How long before kids can play on a new hydroseeded lawn?
Plan on roughly six to eight weeks and two or three mowings before heavy play. Light foot traffic is fine sooner.
Can you seed a yard that backs onto the creek?
Yes. Near the bank we use blankets or a bonded fiber matrix instead of plain mulch and keep soil work back from the bank edge.
Is hydroseed or sod better for a big backyard?
For large areas hydroseed costs much less and roots into your own soil. Sod gives instant cover at a much higher price per square foot. We can walk through both.
