Seeding in a Flood-Prone Basin
Hydroseeding in Ashland has to account for water more than almost anywhere else in our area. The town sits in a basin where Wahoo Creek, Silver Creek and Salt Creek all converge, a setting that has been known to cause intense flooding and leaves the town open to severe damage. The 2019 flood was one of the major reminders of that geography, and floods here reach campgrounds, homes, farmland and the ground around downtown and the schools.
Reseeding after high water
Floodwater leaves behind a layer of silt and debris, kills turf it sits on for long, and often scours bare patches where the current ran fastest. Once the ground dries enough to work, we remove debris, break up the silt crust so seed can reach real soil, fill scoured areas with topsoil and hydroseed. If the yard flooded late in the season, we may recommend a dormant or early-spring seeding instead of rushing seed into cold ground.
Protecting banks and low edges
Properties that touch a creek lose soil every time the water rises. Along those edges we use erosion control blankets with a deep-rooted mix, and keep the regraded lawn sloping gently toward the bank instead of ending in a sharp drop. Where a lot cannot avoid taking water, a turf that tolerates short periods underwater gives you the best odds.
Building boom near I-80
Ashland sits close to Interstate 80, about a half-hour drive from both Omaha and Lincoln, and that location led to a building boom in the late 1990s and 2000s. New homes on higher ground still need the usual sequence: silt fence on the low side, topsoil, fine grade, then hydroseed. On sites that drain toward the creeks, sediment control during construction matters even more.
A limestone ford
Ashland grew up at a low-water limestone ledge on the bottom of Salt Creek, an otherwise mud-bottomed stream that made a good fording site for wagon trains on the Oxbow Trail. That mud-bottomed character is part of why flooding here leaves so much silt behind.

Ashland Water Facts
- Three-creek basin. Ashland sits in a basin where Wahoo Creek, Silver Creek and Salt Creek converge, which has caused intense flooding.
- Flood history. The 2019 flood was a major indicator of how exposed Ashland's creek-basin geography is to severe damage.
- Limestone ford. Ashland formed at a low-water limestone ledge on the bottom of Salt Creek, otherwise a mud-bottomed stream.
- Building boom. Proximity to I-80 and a 30-minute drive to Omaha or Lincoln led to a building boom in the late 1990s and 2000s.

Ashland Questions
How soon after a flood can my lawn be reseeded?
Once the soil is firm enough to walk on without sinking and the silt crust can be broken up. Seeding into mud wastes seed.
Do I need to remove the silt the flood left?
Thin layers can be worked into the soil. Thick deposits smother seed and should be scraped or tilled in before seeding.
What grass handles occasional flooding best?
Tall fescue and some bluegrass blends tolerate short flooding better than most. No lawn grass survives weeks underwater.
Can you protect a lot that backs onto Salt Creek?
We can stabilize the bank edge with blankets and deep-rooted seed, though large channel repairs may need a permit and an engineer.
