Holding Soil on Blair's Hills
Hydroseeding in Blair is shaped by the land the town sits on. Blair is in the Loess Hills, surrounded on all sides by rolling hills and the Missouri River valley. Loess is a wind-deposited silt that stands up in steep faces when dry and slumps when soaked, so any slope that gets bulldozed bare needs cover quickly.
Slopes first, then lawn
On a Blair lot we sort the ground into flat lawn areas and slopes. Flat areas get a standard hydroseed mix with wood or paper hydromulch. Slopes steeper than about 3 to 1 get either a bonded fiber matrix, which dries into a continuous crust that resists raindrop splash, or erosion control blankets stapled in place. The top edge of a slope matters most: if water from a driveway or roof spills over it, we build a berm or a lined swale to carry that water down safely.
After the 2024 storm
On April 26, 2024, portions of Blair were struck by a large EF4 tornado that destroyed or damaged dozens of homes. Near its peak the storm did high-end EF3 damage south of the city. Rebuilding on hilly lots leaves deep ruts and exposed loess, and those yards erode much faster than flat ones. We clear debris, repair the grade, add topsoil and hydroseed, using blankets on any slope that the equipment scraped bare.
History on the land
Blair was platted in 1869 when the Sioux City and Pacific Railroad arrived, and in 1874 a grasshopper storm stripped the region so badly that many Nebraskans faced starvation. Farm country around the town still meets the city edge, and new homes on former crop ground often sit on soil that has lost much of its original topsoil. A soil check and added topsoil make a big difference there.
Native grass on the hillsides
The Loess Hills hold some of the last remaining stands of prairie grass in the region, including big bluestem, little bluestem and Indian grass. For large slopes you do not want to mow, a native prairie mix applied with hydromulch fits the setting and roots deeply into loess.

Blair Questions
What is the steepest slope you can hydroseed in Blair?
With a bonded fiber matrix or blankets, we seed slopes much steeper than a mower can handle. The real limit is usually how much water reaches the slope from above.
My lot was graded after the tornado and keeps washing. What now?
We repair the gullies, add topsoil, control the water entering from above and cover the slope with BFM or blankets before the next storm.
Can you plant prairie grass on my hillside?
Yes. Native mixes suit Loess Hills slopes and need little care once established, though they take a season or two to fill in.
Why does loess erode so fast?
It is a fine silt that holds together when dry but loses its strength when wet, so running water cuts it quickly.
